Join us on a beautiful, dark and bawdy journey to meet the world's Great Goddesses.
Avatara – Dances of the Goddess is the creation of dance teacher Hannah Corr who, back in 2006, brought together a group of women united by a love of Middle Eastern Dance and the Goddess stories. Their vision was to bring to life the myths and tales of these great figures through dance, storytelling and music.
Originally called ‘Ahlam’ (which means ‘dreams’ in Arabic), the show has continued to evolve and grow. There are new goddesses, more dances and with performers currently studying Arabic percussion, the show now contains live drumming. The show also features dancing from all around the world, including Egyptian, North African, Hawaiian, Celtic, Indian and Maori.
In 2009, the name changed to ‘Avatara – Dances of the Goddess’. An Avatara being a deity descended from the spiritual plane to teach or carry a message, much like the Goddesses of the stories. Although the name of the show has changed the essence remains the same – to share with our audience a dark, beautiful and joyous experience.
The Blue Lotus dancers use dancing, drumming and storytelling to bring you face to face with many different goddesses, such as:
Brighid the muse and inspiration for the ancient Celts
Pele the fiery volcano goddess of Hawaii
Bast the Egyptian goddess of playfulness and pleasure
Kali the dark destroyer who drinks the blood of demons
Baubo the untamed Greek goddess who relishes smutty jokes
Inanna who ventures to the underworld to meet her shadow self
Gaia the earth mother who wields a staff with which she creates and sustains all life
Yemaya who symbolises the ever flowing nature of water and life
